Should I Get a Raspberry PI?

What Is A Raspberry PI?

“The Raspberry Pi is a low cost, credit-card sized computer that plugs into a computer monitor or TV and uses a standard keyboard and mouse. It is a capable little device that enables people of all ages to explore computing, and to learn how to program in languages like Scratch and Python. It’s capable of doing everything you’d expect a desktop computer to do, from browsing the internet and playing high-definition video, to making spreadsheets, word-processing, and playing games.”

What are some things we can do with the PI?

  • Security Testing
  • Network Wide Ad Blocking
  • Webservers
  • Small Desktop Computers
  • Retro Gaming Projects
  • Electronic Projects ( I.E. voice automated helper )

Security Testing

Security Testing is one of the more common use cases for Raspberry PIs. Since the PI is so small it makes for easy carrying on the go so it’s a perfect tool for red teaming. Daniel W. Dieterle wrote a few awesome books on how to do this.

Network Wide Ad Blocking

Network Wide Ad Blocking is a great way to keep those pesky ads off your network. If you are tired of the ads ruining your streaming or internet search the pi-hole project might be for you.

If you do not like the idea of having web servers on a VPS ( or have projects that are just for local stuff ) and would rather hold all your data locally a great way to do this is with a PI. Plug it up in the corner have a nice case like the one linked below and run your servers. Another great thing to do with the pi is cluster them and create a Kubernetes cluster. containerize your applications and separate parts out.

Small Desktop Computers

Recently people with 3d printers have started creating desktop shells for the raspberry PI. The PI is already really great for small desktops as you can install any operating system you want on it including Mac OSX, Windows 10, and Linux. All you need is a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You can also just SSH into the PI and use it this way.

Retro Gaming Projects

Retro Enthusiasts use the PI to create gaming machines, arcade games, Gameboys and more. With the ability to customize the PIs and cases it makes it incredibly easy to create whatever retro gaming device you want. There is a list below of a few kits you can buy and start right away.
